Box files

Post by craigob »

Looking for images of period correct box files. the square boxes that sit on shelves for documents and such, Google images turned up a blank.

Thanks!

I can't find any images, and I'm not sure it is exactly what you are looking for, but it seems that the "modern" ring binder / lever arch file was developed in Germany in the 1880s - according to Wikipedia:

"German Friedrich Soennecken invented ring binders in 1886 in Bonn, Germany. He also registered a patent on November 14, 1886 for his Papierlocher für Sammelmappen (hole punch). German Louis Leitz, founder of Leitz later made some important changes in development of ring binders in Stuttgart-Feuerbach. Leitz introduced the hole in the side of the file."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ring_binder

Leitz still manufacture them to this day (but all ring-binders look the same  ) so I presume they didn't look much different to this? I guess, replace the label on the side and you are good to go??:

The 2 Leitz files are late 40s/early 50s. The original ones had the same pattern, but with a green tinge instead of grey.
