I picked up a copy from Helsinki airport. It's very good, and it is nice to see a slightly different perspective on the war.
It also appears to have taken on board a lot of contemporary war film making styles, whilst maintaining a sense of individuality.
Some of the Soviet uniforms leave a lot to be desired. But in total, it is a good film.

Nice take on the Continuation War, but it seems a bit disjointed - especially after the main character gets wounded. The 1944 main battle seems to be tagged on as an afterthought, but the film scores highly for its excellent attention to detail and tight pacing, at least until the end of Jarv's war.
Just got a copy of the 1985 version of the Unknown Soldier. Interested to find out how it differs from the 1955 classic.

Agreed, except for Vantaa, the laughing gnome, one of the most punchable characters in war films.
The Lammio and Rokka characters in the 55 version are much better too. Who in reenactment doesn't want to be Rokka, the coolest soldier that ever was? Eat your heart out, Steiner!

Slim chance of that happening I am afraid. Tiny market - who is interested?Pirkka wrote:I read that the book in English isn't a great translation. It probably needs a new treatment, like the prequel about the Koskela family got.
The book, even as a bad translation, is still a fantastic read, though.
Get your self a Finnish dictionairy and do it yourself!
