NCO sword
My only japanese sword, the leather cover on the scabbard remains just about, the sword knot was originally blue and is missing a tassell. The green plaited cord has always been with this sword and has been suggested to me it may be american parashute cord.the photo came with it and it is assumed to be the original owner.John.

Nice sword
Tassles are an interesting one, if it was blue it sounds like captains grade officers tassle rather than an NCO tassle, maybe the swords owner got a promotion in the field and kept his NCO sword.
Looks in great condition

Re: NCO sword
Hi.
I posted it on WAF and was told its an officers knot on an nco sword, maybe added by the vet; who brought home, but its been on there a long time. The markings are the Kokura arsenal and what looks like(from Gunto sword siteI) makers mark Iijima Token Seisakusho, thats if I have read it correctly. The photo is of a navy guy,I did wonder if this was a Japanese marine, but I've been told its an army sword.

Re: NCO sword
Yeah its certainly an army sword, and Kokura were about the biggest arms manufacture in Japan during the war.
Yeah the photo is a puzzler, certainly looks Navy but what branch of the navy i wouldn't like to take a guess at as i wouldn't have the first clue on that one
Overall all though i still think its a great sword, much better condition than most, keep meaning to get an NCO sword myself but until my officers sword sells i ain't got that kind of money to spare

Re: NCO sword
Update on the photo, turns out to be a semi-famous propaganda photo linked to the Nanking massacre, the sword in the photo is identified as chinese,at least I have found out some more information about it.

Re: NCO sword
yeah the photo is certainly an interesting one, was certainly interested to hear that it may even be a Chinese propaganda photo, would certainly make sense seeing as he doesn't look overaly Japanese, with a strange uniform and chinese sword in his hand

Re: NCO sword
I have a "well loved" example of what is believed to be a NCO sword. Here are three snaps - I have more in hi def if required.
Anyone have any info on it please?

Re: NCO sword
The better the pictures the better the info when it comes to swords Paul
From the 3 you posted i would edge on the side of Chinese fake if im honest. The details on it are very similiar to alot of Chinese made swords you see. The metal fittings aren't correct on the handle, the binding is wrong, NCO swords weren't bound, they were cast metal likes Johns one above, and the late war NCO swords had a carved wooden handle
I don't like the acid etched Japanese characters on the blade, never seen a 100% real sword with it but many of the repros do
Im no expert on swords as its a whole giant subject in its own right but these are my feelings on it Paul, sorry
Bit more info http://home.earthlink.net/~steinrl/repro.htm

Re: NCO sword
Nah - cool Ryan - Bought some years ago on a whim and never researched or messed with it...... Just owned it. There are characters on both sides of the blade - One as shown has a sort of "Rising Sun" or Nationalist Sun type pictogram at the bottom and the other side are definitely Japanese characters The Tsuba is cast brass by the look of it and is in the form of a crane with folded wings. The blade has never had an edge but is of steel with absolutely no signs of folding. It's simply a stock blade of some kind. Grip is of a light wood (very dried out) and the binding is leather with a half twist on either side - no shark or ray skin....... There is a very poorly mounted band at the base of the grip where the lock button protrudes which is made of brass and has a chrysanthemum on the opposite side to the button. If it's a Sexton and has not real value I may just clean it up for a wall piece in the office.
Thanks for the info matey - always good to know.

Re: NCO sword
John Towse has a nice NCO sword as well as a officers sword that his dad liberated from the Japs whille serving in Burma. He was allowed to keep the NCO sword but the officers sword is in the Warwickshire regt museum.
And that boys is how you take a penalty.
