New guy Eispickel question

Post by Axel Dorsch »

Greetings all!

I have been reading this forum for a while but this is my first post. I do a GJ impression and was wondering if someone can tell me the proper way to carry the ice axe. I have seen some drawings of it being carried underneath the flap of the rucksack but this doesnt seem to work in actual practice. Can anyone help me out here on how I shoud secure the ice axe?

Cheers!

If your rucksack is packed properly , and full up , it should work , if not , and you're not actually using as a walking aid in high mountain conditions , either secure it to the rucksack with a strap ( plenty of options on a Gebirgs piece ) or push it down between your back and the rucksack at an angle - again , only really works if it's fairly full . Going into combat situations , you generally wouldn't be carrying one anyway . Essentially , it's an aid to climbing remember . Hope this is of some help .

Wow! That's a great price for a Stubai pick. Thanks for the link, kamerad!

I have one and it's very nice - be aware it's postwar and doesn't come with a wrist loop .

Horrido , Steve .

Servus Axel und Bergkameraden,

The typical period method of carrying an ice axe on a rucksack is either between the straps against your back or inside the rucksack. Here's a sketch from a period mountaineering manual:

And as mentioned above, you only need an ice axe if you are operating in high alpine regions.
